What do you get when you add an old school McKinney Greyhound depot, a hippie sensibility, and a bombastic sense of color?
McKinney’s own garden, home and art shop, Diggin’ It.
The fun and funky shop is sheltered on North Tennessee in the former Greyhound bus depot (really). Previously a gas station, the building was repurposed for the first time in 1959 when Greyhound took it over and delivered people to an from their travels for over 40 years until 2006.

Tracey Collins, a long time resident of McKinney’s historical district, had a vision to repurpose the building once again, and in 2010 that vision became a reality. My guess is that when she had her vision, it was in technicolor. From the moment you drive up to find the front columns wrapped with granny squares crocheted from every hue imaginable, you know you are not in your typical home and garden shop.
Once inside the shop you are greeted with what can be simply described as good cheer. Aside from Collin’s friendly welcome, you will find fantastic garden ornaments and decor for the home that pop out of every nook and cranny as you stroll the shop. You’ll even find clothing and jewelry to suit your one-of-a-kind tastes. Honestly, it’s like going on a treasure hunt, except everything on the map is a treasure. Often a locally made treasure.

Outside the shop you’ll find flowers, brightly colored flowers obviously, for your spring planting needs.
While Collins’ vision for the shop included all the fun and funky finds that it houses, it went further than that. This is why the shop hosts a variety of classes to enrich and improve the lives of McKinney residents. From yoga to meditative gongs to knitting, there is an offering to suit just about everyone.
Diggin’ It is just a little north of the McKinney square, but your visit to downtown won’t be complete without making a stop there. Just head north on Tennessee past the library to find Diggin’ It on the right.
